Art statement of “Manhattan in apple” by Jong Sook Kang
The theme of my recent works is “Manhattan in Apple”. Apple symbolize life, love, forgiveness, reconciliation. Vertical and horizontal line as morphological elements were utilized to simplify images of Manhattan. By displaying solid—curved line, sharp—dull details as geometric form disclosed internal motives in symbolic way that haven’t expressed my ego. Morph of apples have been limited to original form with sections in diverse angles that makes overt contrast to voluminous aspect of apple.
Basic notions on apple shape was transformed on blank canvas. Morphological elements that are displayed on the notions of canvas were symbolic skyscrapers and bridges embracing Manhattan were recreated through simple line and form on each apple.
Typical street scenes and park as well envisioned. Detailed aspect of quite complicated city with various race and cultural background keeping balance, harmony and order, were created. Color scheme representing flourishing metropolitan were expressed with black and yellow line. Night scene of Manhattan in splendid starry panorama that are glowing lighted skyscrapers would as finest details. Finished pieces were designated to be displayed both on mural and floor installation in various ways.
Structural soundness of each piece was plasticized through firing with clays that contains grog in high proportion. 2 times and 3 times firing with glazing in low temperature had been applied.
